Every year, CNHS hosts the Rose Bowl Photographic Competition to showcase the amazing wildlife and nature photography that our members have produced in the last year. If you would like to enter this years competition, please contact photo.cnhs.uk and read on for further information.

There are three categories for entries for the Rose Bowl as follows:

  1. Colchester Natural History Society Recording area

    • Includes Manningtree, Halsted, Coggeshall, Tiptree, Mersea, Bradwell-on-sea, Maldon, Wivenhoe, Brightlingsea, Clacton-on-sea, Harwich, and of course Colchester.

  2. Rest of the British Isles

  3. Rest of the World.

You can enter up to seven images in total, spread among the three categories however you wish.

  • Format: Slide, print or digital (JPG preferred but most formats catered for)

  • Subject: Any natural history subjects taken in 2026 in the above categories.

Please remember:

  1. There must be no captions or text of any kind added to the image.

  2. Each image should have a clear title, which may include subject name to species or other level, location, event or theme.

There is immense scope for all sorts of subject matter and we look forward to receiving your entries later in the year. The closing date for entries is 30th November 2026 but entries can be sent in earlier, you do not have to leave it until this date. If you have any queries about file formats or file sizes then please contact photo@CNHS.uk. Winning photos will be published in Cervus or on the CNHS website, and on our Facebook page. Last year's winner of the Rose Bowl, Liz Cutting, will judge the entries. All entries are sent to the judge with no details of the photographer and are thus judged anonymously. Look at the CNHS website to see a selection of past years’ winners’ photographs.
